Born in Kilrush, County Clare in 1929, Peter Keane joined the RAF at the age of 17. He served as a batman, a PT instructor, a jungle survival specialist and a parachute instructor. In 1967 he set a world record for jumping from 42,500 ft - eight miles - as part of the RAF's specialist parachute testing team. He served in the Far East, spending time in Malayan jungle where he was inducted into a tribe of headhunters, and was a champion boxer for the RAF.
