Peter Pilkington joined the RAF the day he turned seventeen and a half. He trained as an engine fitter, served a tour with The King's Colour Squadron and as a motor transport fitter. Eventually he made his way to become an Air Loadmaster, and was the first in that trade to receive a commission. His first active involvement was the Berlin Airlift, flying Beverleys down a narrow air corridor constantly threatened by Soviet Mig fighters. He went on to serve in some of the hot-spots of the Middle East. Before leaving the RAF, after a career of nearly thirty years, Peter was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air.
