Operation Exodus was the code name for the airborne repatriation of British ex-prisoners of war from the continent at the end of the Second World War. 354,000 British POWs were released from captivity when their camps were liberated and RAF bombers were hastily converted into transport aircraft to help bring them home. Lancasters carried between 20 and 30 passengers and in 3,500 Exodus sorties between 3 April and 31 May 1945 75,000 ex-POWs were flown home in RAF aircraft.
