Michael Herbert Smith in Newcastle in 1938 and raised in Rhodesia. After 3 years at Cranwell becoming an RAF officer, he learned to fly on Piston Provosts, followed by the Vampire. He flew tactical photo reconnaissance missions operating both the Canberra PR3 & PR7. On July 16th, 1964, whilst on a training sortie in Vulcan XA909 over the north of England, the No4 Olympus engine suffered a catastrophic failure at 43,000ft and became the first complete Vulcan crew to successfully evacuate the aircraft.
