Charles Clarke was an RAF bomb aimer during World War II. His Lancaster was shot down over the Black Forest in February 1944. He was captured and held prisoner in Stalag Luft III, the prison camp which saw the mass breakout of 76 Allied airmen in what became known as The Great Escape. He survived the War, and rose to the rank of Air Commodore.
