would be able to see their faces in the boot
but for someone who is black or brown,

and we can't really see our faces
as much as Fred next to us.
If you had brown skin, you had to polish your boots a bit harder.

Joining the Medical Branch of the Royal Air Force sheltered Peter from the brunt of these tensions, as he got used to swapping one culture for another.
