Major Harold Harington Balfour was the first WW1 flying ace to serve at Bircham Newton Aerodrome in Norfolk during 1918. He was the first commanding officer of the Aerodrome and the chief instructor of the first unit based here in 1918. He claimed to be the first airman to fly an aircraft naked over the town of Hunstanton, which he mentioned in one of his books, 'An Airman Marches' and that this record was never beaten at the time of writing his book.
