Former RAF pilot John Peters and his navigator John Nichol, were shot down during the Gulf War, in January 1991. John’s Tornado was hit by a surface to air missile forcing both men to eject over hostile territory. They were captured and subjected to over seven weeks of torture. John would be paraded on Iraqi state television during the conflict, and his face seen on the front of national newspapers. On release, John continued his flying career before retiring in 2000.
