Play / pause Flying the Whitley

Flying the Whitley

  • Ian Brownlee

Transcript

Well, it was...

it was

a heavy, cumbersome airplane.

But its...

its vices were

known,

and

it had good engines.

In other words, you...

your problems of flying on one engine

were reduced to a minimum.

It didn't always happen,

but, when it did,

it wasn't fatal every time.

Long range,

it carried adequate

bombs.

It had good protection and a four-gun turret in the back

which, in those days, was very effective.

It was heavy to handle.

You found you developed

strong muscles across your shoulders

from heaving it around.

But you get used to these things.

In the first couple of hours of flying the airplane.
