They had the WAAF's quarters,
I mean no one's allowed to go there,
this was in Compton Basset.
We weren't allowed to go near them.
Some of them were gymnasts,
and they used to tease us by, in their shorts,
they'd run round the square when we were on parade,
and we had to keep ours straight ahead (laughs).

We weren't allowed to go near the WAAFs
Derek Smith was 18 when he was called up for National Service. He was accepted into the Air Force and trained as a telegraph mechanic. He served in Egypt, Cyprus and Kenya, before returning to a career in banking in London. He shares some of his adventures with us on a visit to the RAF Museum in Hendon.
