David Lewis was born in Finsbury Park, London in 1924. He volunteered for the RAF in 1943, qualifying as a navigator in Wellington and Lancaster bombers. He was posted to No 75 New Zealand Squadron, based at RAF Mepal in Cambridgeshire, serving as a warrant officer. His squadron downed no fewer than 45 Luftwaffe fighters in a series of bitterly contested raids over Berlin and the Ruhr Valley.
We have to thank these men for our freedom and prosperity
