From Akrotiri he was posted to RAF El Adem Tobruk where he was to be build a practice range for the bombers. He experienced the Ramadan. He and his friend 'Dodo' was invited for dinner by the local headman, but he didn't like the taste and he never went back. From Tobruk he was sent on detachment to RAF Idris in Tripoli, again building a practice area for the bombers. When he was there in 1957 they were shooting the film 'Ice Cold in Alex' with Alec Guiness and Leslie Carol. They wanted them to be extras but their CO didn't want it. He went back to Tobruk and from there on, in 1957, he was posted to in RAF Khormaksar in Aden where they had to build a temporary runway while the existing runway would be repaired. In 1958 his five years were up and he was sent back.
