Ian Fortune served as a Chinook helicopter pilot in Afghanistan, providing essential support to ground forces during the conflict. While in Afghanistan he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for successfully completing a casualty evacuation sortie, despite a bullet wound to the head. This was one of four DFCs awarded to pilots of ‘Bravo November’, a Chinook helicopter which has seen RAF service in a wide range of operations since the Falklands War of 1982.
